Online Backup

Having a backup is an important step in owning a computer. Things such as your music library, photos, videos, documents, even programs and games are all dependent on a piece of hardware inside the computer that has mechanically moving parts (unless you have a Solid State Hard Drive, but that’s a whole new post). And with any mechanically moving hardware, it is going to eventually fail. When this happens it is important that you have a recent, or semi-recent, backup of your information. When you work in IT, backup seems to become second nature. I currently find myself in a position where I have multiple layers of backup; RAID-1 in my computer, RAID-1 on my first backup, and RAID-5 on my other backup. However, if you don’t want to worry about backing up to physically located devices that you have to manage and maintain, you have the option to backup remotely via online services. One provider that you may choose to backup to is Carbonite. Carbonite, provides secure and encrypted transmission of your data to them; and once uploaded, they will store your information on a 15-drive RAID-6 device with encryption. This means that your data will be safe from the eyes of others and will be available as long as they don’t have more than 2 hard drives fail at a time.
